Old man and his three sons

An old man had three sons. They did not love one another. So they were not at peace. This made the old man very unhappy.

One day the old man called his sons. He brought a bundle of sticks. He asked his sons to break the bundle one by one. Each of the sons tried to break the bundle, but none succeeded.

Then the old man asked his eldest son to untie the bundle. This was done. He then gave one stick to each of his sons and said, ‘Try to break your sticks.’ Now they broke their sticks very easily.

The old man said, “My boys, you have seen that you cannot break the sticks when they are tied together. But you can break them when they are separated. This is the strength of unity. If you are united, nobody will be able to do any harm. So do not quarrel among yourselves and try to live in peace. Then you will all be happy.”

Unity is Strength

Goose that laid the Golden Egg

Once there was a farmer in a certain village. The Farmer had a strange goose that laid a golden egg every day. The farmer sold the egg and got much money every day. Soon he became very rich.

But the farmer was greedy. He wanted to become richer still. He was not satisfied with one egg a day.

One day he thought to himself, “My goose gives me only one egg every day. But if I cut open her belly, I shall get all the golden eggs at once. Then I shall be the richest man in this village.”

So thinking, the farmer killed the goose with a sharp knife. But alas! There was not a single egg in her belly.

The farmer was very sad. He lost both the goose and the golden eggs.

Greed brings Grief

Obstacles Are Opportunities In Disguise

It was reign of King Evan. People lived happily under his reign. He was so conscious about keeping them happy and considered the people in his reign as his own family. He took utmost care to fulfill every need of his fellowmen.

However, often, King Evan used to hear tantrums from his court men that people in his kingdom are bullying him for various reasons and seem to be dissatisfied for nothing. He decided to find out what make his fellowmen feel displeased. One day, he decided to take a round visit to examine what the people concerned about him. He started his travel to visit the towns and cities in disguise. He could not see any men unhappy and this made the king so happy. It was half way through the journey and he was delighted to see happy men.

He decided to place a huge boulder on the mid of the road to test the people who pass by the road. His soldiers placed a huge boulder on the road and all of them got hidden in the nearby place to watch what happens next.

The boulder almost covers half of the road and caused a disturbance in riding vehicles. Many wealthy people in his reign came by the road; still they simply walked around the boulder. Nobody really seemed to be cared about the boulder disturbing the movements of vehicle.

There were some of the wealthiest people who pass by the road. Also, King’s court men also saw the boulder and did nothing to move it away from the middle of the road. In addition, they bad-mouthed about the king for not maintaining the road properly. These are the people who king believed to be his loyal group and well-wishers!

The king was shocked to hear these words. A fruit seller passed by the road with his loads of fruits. He stopped himself when he saw the huge boulder. Then he put aside his burden, and tried to move the stone. After several attempts of pushing, lifting and moving the boulder, he succeeded in removing the obstacle from the road.

He saw a huge bag placed under the boulder. He took the bag and was extremely surprised. The bag had a note saying, ‘Here is the gift for you! It has 1000 gold coins and it is for the one who removes this obstacle from the road!’

The fruit seller was so happy and he was invited by the King for a feast and rewarded nicely.

Fear vs Respect

Long time ago very cruel king name Virat Singh was ruling the city of Vijay Nagar. All citizens were fearful because of his cruelty.

Virat has a dog named Jack, which he used to love more than anything, one fateful morning Jack died. Virat Singh organized last rituals for dog; entire city came to cremation ground. Virat Singh was very happy to see that people love him so much and he felt he is the most popular king in the world. After few days Virat Singh died, but no one came for his funerals.

Respect is something you have to earn, you cannot force it on others to respect you. There is a thin line between Fear and Respect, every one of us should understand it and do necessary corrections in our personalities.

The Lazy Farmer

The rain gods had been smiling the whole night. The roads were muddy and the potholes were filled to the brim.  It was the day for the market and Raju the farmer was riding his cart along the country road. He had to reach the market early so that he can sell his hay. It was very difficult for the horses to drag the load through the deep mud. On his journey suddenly the wheels of the horse cart sank into the mire.

The more the horses pulled, the deeper the wheel sank.  Raju climbed down from his seat and stood beside his cart. He searched all around but could not find anyone around to help him.  Cursing his bad luck, he looked dejected and defeated. He didn’t make the slightest effort to get down on the wheel and lift it up by himself. Instead he started cursing his luck for what happened. Looking up at the sky, he started shouting at God, “I am so unlucky! Why has this happened to me? Oh God, come down to help me.”

After a long wait, God finally appeared before Raju. He asked Raju, “Do you think you can move the chariot by simply looking at it and whining about it? Nobody will help you unless you make some effort to help yourself. Did you try to get the wheel out of the pothole by yourself? Get up and put your shoulder to wheel and you will soon find the way out.”

Raju was ashamed of himself. He bent down and put his shoulder to the wheel and urged on the horses. In no time the wheel was out of the mire. Raju learnt his lesson. He thanked God and carried on his journey happily.

God helps those who help themselves.

Be Good To Your Enemies

Many many years ago, there lived a dog named Tom. Tom was adopted as a pet in a wealthy household and he was daily showered with nice foods and affections by her mistress Mrs Havisham. All day, Tom lived in a kennel within the compound of the house and he tried his best to guard the home of his mistress. Whenever a thief or a burgler came within the vicinity, Tom would bark as loudly as he could to scare the living daylights out of the culprit. He was the favourite of his mistress. When night fell, he slept on a nice blanket inside his kennel and when day broke he had his food served before him in no time.

But the neighbourhood dogs were not so lucky and they were jealous of Tom's fortune. Now and then, they would bark from outside the gates of Tom's house and utter curses at him. All this disturbed Tom a little, but he would only say,

"Poor fellows, they have to struggle so much for their food while I am so lucky. I must not shout at them and add to their misery."

So he kept quiet and went about his business, turning a deaf ear to their insults.

One day, as he was taking a walk with his mistress, Tom found that some young boys were throwing stones at those same dogs who insulted him. The dogs were cornered and they had nowhere to go. They could in no way avoid being hit by the stones thrown at them. Many of them were bleeding and barking feebly in protest. But the boys were not in a mood to let go of them so lightly. They picked up bigger stones and rocks to have more fun at the expense of the weak, helpless dogs.

Tom could not hold himself back. He was of a strong build and had a very deep voice. He knew that he could scare the boys. He managed to wrench his leash free out of his mistress' hands and he ran towards the boys.

The boys were startled at the terrible barking that Tom directed at them. Their blood froze at the sight of the huge Tom baring his fangs and running towards them. They dropped their rocks and ran away as fast as their legs could carry them.

"Go home" Tom said to his bloodied abusers "no one will disturb you anymore."

He ran back to his mistress who had seen all that Tom did. She patted Tom and praised him for his courage.

That night, Tom's mistress saw a strange sight. The dogs whom Tom had saved in the morning had gathered near the gates of her house. It seemed to her as if they were telling something to her pet.

"Maybe they are thanking Tom for his brave gesture." she thought.

And right she was! From that day, Tom and his abusers had become friends. Tom's kindness had won over his abusers' hatred and he had earned their love, respect and admiration that nothing on earth could buy.

Be good to all, even if they happen to be your enemies.

Two Fishermen

There were two fishermen who where close pals. They used to catch fish together on weekends. Since they were busy in their personal work and family, they hardly spend time together. It was a Saturday and they decided to drive to a nearby pond to enjoy their day in fishing. Also, they wanted to have some feast with the fish they catch.

Both carried essential utensils, cooking accessories, ingredients and fishing equipments. They reached the pond.

They sat at a distance and started hunting for the fish. The first fisherman got a big and beautiful fish in a few minutes. He was so happy and placed the fish in the ice box to retain the freshness. He decided to cook the fish as a whole fish in the noon. He spent some more time and captured a few more fishes. He decided to make a grand meal with the fish. Also, he froze a few fishes to take it back to home.

It was almost more than an hour they were fishing. He then approached the second fisherman and asked him if he need any help. The second man said no. In a few minutes, the second fisherman captured a large fish. However, he put that back into the lake.

The first man was surprised at his act. He remained silent. The second man captured many big fishes, but he just put back all those fishes into the lake.

Very annoyed by his act, the first fisherman angrily asked him, ‘Are you mad? Why do you put your fishes back into the water? They were beautiful and big!’

The second fisherman replied, ‘I know they were big, but I don’t have the big pan to cook the big fish! So I’m looking for a smaller fish that fits my cooking pan! The god is troubling me today.’

By hearing this, the first fisherman was surprised. He advised the second fisherman to cut the big fish into small pieces to suit in the pan and cook them properly.

Many people are just like the second fisherman. We are provided with handful of big opportunities, chances and even fortune that we many times overlook. We need to work out just the same like the big fish fit into a small pan.

God will always give massive possibilities as well as problems that we can handle effortlessly. Everything given to us is within our means.

Tell your problems that you have god with you rather than telling the god that you have problems.
